Polyester crepe is recommended for beginners making a fitted long dress: it doesn’t shrink, it doesn’t fray, and it holds its shape well. Its only drawback is static electricity, which you can eliminate with an anti-static spray or by lining the bodice pieces.

Long summer dresses: voile cotton and double gauze

For summer designs, voile cotton (70–90g/m²) and double gauze cotton (100–130g/m²) produce excellent results on patterns featuring ruffles or gathers. Double gauze becomes even softer after 3 or 4 washes, which slightly alters the drape of the finished garment. Bear this in mind if you’re sewing a dress with a gathered neckline: the weight of the gathers decreases with each wash.

Printing and assembling a PDF pattern for a maxi dress: a foolproof method

PDF patterns for long dresses are available in A4 format (for home printing) or A0 (for professional printing, costing between €3 and €6 depending on the shop). In A4 format, a long dress typically requires between 30 and 60 sheets to be assembled. Before gluing anything together, print the pattern’s test page and measure the test square: it must be exactly 10 cm. If this is not the case, your printer is scaling the printout and all your pattern pieces will be out of proportion.

Assemble the pieces edge-to-edge along the gluing marks, without any overlap. Use paper tape rather than standard sticky tape: it won’t bulge under the weight of the pattern and can be easily removed if you need to correct any misalignment.
