Sewing patterns for the holidays: put together your summer wardrobe before you set off
Sewing your own holiday clothes means setting off with exactly what you want to wear, in the fabrics you’ve chosen, tailored to your own measurements. A hand-sewn summer dress made from 130 g/m² washed linen is in a different league to a high-street equivalent: it drapes differently, breathes better, and fits you perfectly. This category brings together summer sewing patterns selected for their practicality when travelling: simple designs, achievable finishes, and cuts that suit real body shapes.
Which patterns should you prioritise for a hand-sewn summer suitcase
The rule for a capsule sewing wardrobe comes down to a few versatile pieces. A summer dress with a square neckline or adjustable straps is perfect for the beach, lunch on a terrace and the evening market. A skirt pattern with an elasticated waist can be sewn in just two hours using any flowing viscose fabric. A blouse pattern with short ruffled sleeves looks just as good over a swimsuit as it does with linen trousers. For children, designs with built-in stretch or an adjustable waist with a drawstring help avoid sizing mistakes between ordering and departure.
Jumpsuits and dungarees are often underestimated for holidays. A pattern for wide-leg cotton gauze jumpsuits, which can be sewn in a single day, replaces both a top and bottoms and takes up just one space in your suitcase. The same applies to co-ordinated sets – a top and skirt or shorts pattern: sewing both from the same fabric takes 4 to 5 hours and produces a result that’s hard to find in ready-to-wear.
Summer fabrics: what the weight actually means
The choice of fabric determines 80% of the final result for a holiday outfit. For viscose, aim for 100 to 130 g/m² for a flowing drape without being too sheer. Below 90 g/m², you’ll need a lining or a slip. Washed linen at 130–150 g/m² is the best compromise for structured styles such as blouses or jumpsuits: it creases but ‘nicely’, it regains its shape after washing, and it stands up to long days. Double-weave cotton gauze at 90–110 g/m² is ideal for unlined summer dresses, provided you choose a pattern designed for loosely woven fabrics.
EcoVero viscose deserves a special mention. Its thermoregulatory properties are genuine: in 35°C heat, it can be worn next to the skin without the ‘sticky’ effect of polyester. It is more sensitive to washing (30°C, gentle spin cycle), which is something to bear in mind if you’re sewing for children who get dirty several times a day.
PDF or A0 patterns: what’s new for the holidays
The vast majority of holiday PDF patterns offered here are available in A4 format for printing at home and in A0 format for printing at a print shop (expect to pay 2 to 4 euros per sheet depending on the format). If you’re sewing multiple sizes or multiple garments from the same pattern, the A0 format becomes cost-effective from the second use onwards. The A4 PDF remains the best option for a pattern you’ll only use once, or for a seamstress who prefers to keep her templates on thick paper. Patterns with seam allowances included save 15 to 20 minutes of preparation per design, which makes a difference when sewing several items before setting off.
Some designers featured in this shop have developed variations designed specifically for summer: low necklines suited to hot weather, open backs with criss-cross ties, and a choice of lengths (mid-thigh, midi, maxi). Instinct Couture, for example, offers dress patterns with several difficulty levels for the same design, which is useful when you want to work quickly. Atelier Adriette is renowned for the quality of its illustrated instructions, which are particularly useful for finishing slippery fabrics such as viscose or cotton satin.
Sizes and adjustments: what to check before cutting
For summer patterns, two measurements are crucial: the bust measurement for strapless or strappy styles, and the hip measurement for straight skirts and dresses. Most patterns offer sizes ranging from 36 to 52 or above, but the differences in fit between styles vary depending on the designer. Always check the size chart provided rather than relying on your usual ready-to-wear size: a size 40 from one fabric brand may sometimes be equivalent to a size 42 from another. For styles with an elasticated waist, the margin for error is greater, making them a safer option for beginners.
For children’s summer patterns, designs with a fold-over hem or extra width at the bottom allow you to account for growth between the time of sewing and when the garment will be worn. A dress sewn in April for a summer in July can be cut half a size larger without the result looking disproportionate, provided the cut is flowing.
Sewing accessories to pack in your suitcase
accessory patterns are often the quickest items to put together before setting off: a cotton canvas beach bag, a zipped pouch for sun cream, or a coated cotton shoulder bag. Most of these designs can be sewn in under two hours, using fabric offcuts from other projects. The children’s accessories range includes rucksacks and pencil cases tailored to the sizes of the little ones.
