PDF pyjama patterns for women: choosing the right style before buying the fabric
A successful pair of pyjamas owes almost nothing to chance. It all comes down to the choice of pattern: body shape, intended fabric, technical difficulty and desired length. This collection brings together PDF patterns for women’s pyjamas designed to be sewn at home, in sizes 34 to 52 depending on the style, with instructions designed to minimise errors when cutting.
The PDF pattern has a practical advantage over paper patterns sold in shops: you can print it out whenever you need it, in the size you want, without worrying about creases distorting the lines. A4 printing works on any printer with page assembly (the alignment marks are included in the file). An A0 print costs between €3 and €8 at a print shop and eliminates the need for assembly. Depending on the pattern and the amount of fabric you’re using, this choice can significantly change how you organise your cutting.
What fabrics should you use to sew a women’s pyjama pattern?
The choice of fabric determines everything else. Summer pyjamas made from 100% cotton single-faced jersey (150–160 g/m²) will be cooler than those made from polyester jersey, but less resistant to repeated washing at 40°C. Viscose drapes better, but it stretches and loses its shape if you sew it too quickly without a jersey needle. Brushed cotton flannel (200–250 g/m²) remains the go-to choice for winter styles: it retains heat without being heavy, and its short pile hides minor sewing imperfections.
For patterns that include an elasticated waistband — the majority of pyjama trousers — use a flat elastic measuring 2.5 to 4 cm, depending on the width of the tunnel specified. An elastic that is too thin in a wide tunnel will result in uneven gathering that is difficult to correct once the piece has been assembled.
Choosing a women’s pyjama pattern to suit your sewing ability
The patterns in this collection vary in technical difficulty. Two-piece sets comprising elasticated trousers and a straight-cut top are the most accessible for a beginner: few pattern pieces, no intricate armholes, and often completed in 3 to 4 hours using a standard sewing machine (a serger is optional). Designs with notched collars, front button plackets or buttoned cuffs require you to be able to sew bias binding or a buttonhole, which is suitable for an advanced intermediate level.
Some designers, such as Klafoutis or Instinct Couture, offer patterns with particularly detailed instructions, tailored to those new to sewing nightwear. Others, such as Atelier Adriette or Vestiaire Éponyme, are aimed more at seamstresses who want a result close to ready-to-wear, with more technical finishes.
What a really good two-piece women’s pyjama pattern pack actually contains
A well-structured pattern pack should contain: the cutting plan (which piece goes in which direction along the grain), a guide to the seam allowances used — 1 cm or 1.5 cm, which varies depending on the designer — assembly marks, and a size chart with bust, waist and hip measurements. Check that the measurements in the size chart correspond to your body measurements and not to the finished garment measurements: some patterns specify measurements with ease built in, whilst others do not.
To adjust between two sizes, the simplest technique is to mix and match: cut size S at the bust, size M at the waist and size L at the hips. Most of the PDF patterns in this collection include several sizes in the same file, which makes it easy to work directly on the pattern without having to reassemble it.
Summer vs winter women’s pyjama patterns: the practical differences
A summer pyjama pattern for women focuses on lightweight pieces: a loose neckline, cap sleeves or sleeveless, short trousers or shorts with a 3 to 5 cm hem. A winter pattern generally features long sleeves with cuffs, long trousers and sometimes a button placket or a collar to keep out draughts. For both, trousers with an elasticated waist remain the most comfortable option for everyday wear, and the easiest to adjust if your waist measurement doesn’t match the size chart exactly.
Common mistakes to avoid when using a PDF pyjama pattern for women
The first mistake is printing without checking the scale. Every pattern includes a test square — usually 5 × 5 cm or 10 × 10 cm — which you should measure before cutting anything out. Printing at 95% instead of 100% shifts all the seams and means the finished garment won’t match the size you’ve chosen.
The second mistake concerns the grain of the fabric. Jersey fabric should always be cut with the direction of greatest stretch running around the body, i.e. horizontally, not vertically. This is almost always specified in the instructions, but is often ignored by beginners who lay out the pieces without checking the grain of the fabric. The result: a top that pulls at the shoulders and trousers that ride up to the knees after two washes.
