Men’s T-shirt patterns: sewing a garment tailored to your actual body shape

Ready-to-wear men’s T-shirts suffer from a structural problem: standardised sizes cover body types that have nothing in common. A ‘M’ might fit a man of 165 cm perfectly, yet be too short for another man of 180 cm with the same chest measurement. Sewing your own T-shirt from a men’s T-shirt PDF pattern solves this problem at source. You can set the chest ease according to your desired fit, adjust the body length to your actual proportions, and end up with a garment that truly suits your figure.

Choosing jersey fabric for a men’s T-shirt sewing pattern: weights and properties

The success of a sewn T-shirt depends 60% on the choice of fabric, even before we get to the technique. For a summer T-shirt worn next to the skin, a single-faced cotton jersey weighing between 150 and 180 g/m² is the right choice: it’s breathable, withstands 40 washes at 40°C without any issues provided the polyester content remains below 20%, and retains its shape when cut on the bias. For an autumn version or a base layer under a jumper, opt for a 200–240 g/m² interlock: its double-sided structure doesn’t curl when cut, which makes the job considerably easier for beginner seamstresses. Avoid viscose jersey for your first men’s jersey project, as it’s too slippery to cut and assemble without the right equipment.

Straight, fitted or oversized: which men’s T-shirt pattern suits your body shape?

Three silhouettes cover most needs. The straight fit, with 4 to 6 cm of chest ease, suits most body types and remains visually neutral. The fitted cut (2 to 3 cm of ease) is more demanding: a 2 cm difference at the armhole completely changes arm mobility, so always make a test toile in a similar jersey before cutting the final fabric. The oversized cut, with 10 cm of ease or more, is more forgiving of cutting inaccuracies and is quicker to make, making it the best place to start for your first men’s T-shirt sewing pattern.

For long-sleeved designs, check whether the pattern offers a version with a cuff opening or a simple tube sleeve. The tube sleeve version is quicker to sew, but if the width at the cuff is calculated too tightly, it becomes a struggle to put on in everyday life.

Jersey finishes on a hand-sewn men’s T-shirt: collar band, topstitching, hems

The collar band accounts for 80 per cent of the T-shirt’s visual appeal. Cut from jersey along the direction of greatest stretch, it must be cut 10 to 15 per cent shorter than the collar circumference measured on the pattern to create the tension that prevents puckering. This is a calculation that well-designed patterns explicitly state in their instructions.

For the bottom hem and sleeves, a twin needle (2.5 mm spacing) on a domestic sewing machine visually replicates the chain stitch found on factory-made T-shirts. Without a twin needle, an elongated zigzag stitch (length 3, width 1.5) remains invisible on the right side and holds up perfectly in the wash. A 4-thread overlocker speeds up the side seams and finishes them in a single pass, but it is not essential for a sturdy result.

Designers specialising in men’s PDF sewing patterns in this shop

The range of men’s sewing patterns in French is more limited than that for women, but a few designers in the shop have specialised in this area. Le Papa de Jojo offers men’s designs with sizes up to 3XL and instructions tailored for sewing jersey, designed for seamstresses who do not necessarily have a background in women’s sewing. Vestiaire Éponyme focuses on more structured cuts for those looking for something beyond the basic T-shirt. Lab Zéro and Instinct Couture also include men’s designs in their catalogues.

To build a cohesive, tailored wardrobe, men’s jumper patterns generally share the same emphasis on comfort as T-shirts, making it easy to switch between the two. The selection of men’s trouser patterns logically completes the ensemble: a pair of chinos or jersey joggers made to the same measurements as your T-shirt ensures a consistency of proportions that ready-to-wear clothing simply cannot offer. The men’s coat patterns and men’s accessories allow you to take the creation of a fully hand-sewn wardrobe a step further.

How do you adjust a men’s T-shirt pattern to suit your body shape?

Measure your chest circumference and compare it with the pattern’s size chart. The ease indicated (the difference between the finished garment’s measurement and your chest circumference) determines the fit: less than 4 cm gives a slim fit, 5 to 7 cm a comfortable fit, and 8 cm or more a loose fit. Make a quick toile using a similar jersey fabric before cutting the final fabric, particularly to check the armhole length.

Which machine should you use to sew a men’s T-shirt pattern in jersey?

A standard domestic machine with a size 75 or 90 jersey needle is enough to get started. Add a 2.5 mm twin needle for hems (around 5 euros from a haberdashery shop) and you’ll achieve a finish close to that of a ready-made garment. A 4-thread overlocker speeds up the side seams. The only investment that really makes a difference to jersey finishes is a coverstitch machine, but it isn’t essential for producing a sturdy, neat T-shirt.

How much fabric do you need for a men’s short-sleeved T-shirt pattern?

For a size M (chest circumference around 100 cm), allow 1.5 metres for jersey with a width of 150 cm. For an XL, allow 1.8 metres. For long sleeves, add 30 to 40 cm. Always allow an extra 20 cm on top of the theoretical measurement to account for running the fabric with the grain and any necessary pattern adjustments.

Are PDF T-shirt patterns for men suitable for larger sizes?

It depends on the designer. Check the size chart before purchasing: some patterns only go up to XL (chest circumference 108 cm), whilst others go up to 3XL (128 cm and above). If your size exceeds the size range provided, enlarging the pattern proportionally at the side seams is easier to do with jersey than with woven fabrics.
