Men’s sweatshirt patterns: making a garment that really holds its shape

Sewing a men’s sweatshirt requires more precision than it might seem. The shoulders are broad, the armholes deep, and any imbalance in proportions is immediately apparent in the way the fabric drapes. A good men’s sweatshirt pattern starts here: shoulder blocks designed for the male physique, a ribbed hem and cuffs that won’t lose their shape after ten washes, and a hood designed for a man rather than a woman’s hood scaled up in size.

The designs in this collection cover the three main construction methods used in men’s tailoring. The raglan sleeve, popularised in sportswear from the 1880s onwards, remains the easiest to assemble and offers the greatest freedom of movement in the shoulders. The set-in sleeve creates a more structured silhouette, reminiscent of urban wear. The pattern for a zip-up or hooded sweatshirt requires a little more technical skill: inserting a separable spiral zip, and assembling a two-panel hood, possibly with a central gusset for volume.

Choosing the right fabric for a men’s adult sweatshirt pattern

The choice of fabric determines everything. For a loungewear or mid-season sweatshirt, a brushed fleece weighing 300 to 350 g/m² is ideal: it sews easily, retains its shape and can be finished with a zigzag stitch or on a overlocker. For a lighter sweatshirt worn in spring or during physical activity, 250 to 280 g/m² French terry is a better option, as it doesn’t get as hot and its looped pile remains discreet under a pair of jeans.

Avoid fabrics under 200 g/m² for men’s sweatshirts: the shoulder yokes and armholes will gape. A men’s sweatshirt needs body. If you opt for a fabric containing Lycra (5–8% elastane), reduce the side seam allowances slightly to avoid a baggy effect at the hips.

Men’s hoodie pattern: key points to bear in mind during assembly

The hood is the feature that most often distinguishes a successful sweatshirt from a failed one. Two mistakes crop up time and time again: a hood that’s too small, which can’t be pulled over the head properly, and a drawstring tunnel that’s too narrow, causing the cord to get stuck during washing. On a well-designed pattern, the hood measures at least 30 cm in depth from the collar seam to the top, and the drawstring tunnel is at least 2.5 cm wide.

Check the neckline curve before cutting. On a men’s sweatshirt, the neckline is generally higher at the front and deeper at the back than on a women’s style. If this isn’t the case in the pattern, you’ll end up with a hood that constantly pulls forwards, no matter how well you assemble it.

Difficulty levels and available size range

The patterns range from beginner level – featuring a basic raglan-sleeved hoodless sweatshirt with pre-made ribbing – to intermediate level, with a men’s zipped hooded sweatshirt or a flat-seamed ribbed collar. Men’s sewing remains less represented than women’s sewing in French collections, which explains why the available patterns tend to remain accessible by editorial choice.

Sizes generally range from S to XXL, with a comprehensive measurement chart. Before cutting, measure your chest circumference, hip circumference and shoulder length. On a pattern for a men’s raglan sweatshirt, it is mainly the chest circumference and shoulder width that determine the size. It is common to cut one size larger than intended for the shoulders and adjust the body whilst sewing.

PDF format: print and assemble in no time

Patterns are available in A4 format, to be printed and assembled in 30 to 60 minutes, or in A0 format, which can be ordered from a local printer for €3 to €5. The tablet-friendly format is indicated where available. Each pattern includes a 10 cm × 10 cm test square to check before assembling the pages. This is a step that many people skip, and it accounts for half of all final sizing issues: a 2 mm discrepancy on this square results in a 3 to 4 cm error in the chest measurement.

An illustrated instruction booklet accompanies each pattern, with assembly markings and grain line indicators. Some PDF sewing patterns for men include a step-by-step video tutorial for technical steps such as fitting a separable zip or assembling the hood.

Building a hand-sewn men’s wardrobe

A well-made sweatshirt is incredibly versatile. Paired with tailored jogging bottoms, it creates a cohesive outfit for everyday wear or sport. Paired with chinos or straight-leg trousers, it transitions effortlessly from the weekend to a casual outing. To expand your hand-sewn menswear wardrobe, the men’s trouser patterns pair naturally with the designs in this collection.

The range of men’s patterns remains more limited than that for women in French PDF sewing patterns, but it has expanded significantly since 2020. Designers such as Le Papa de Jojo and Vestiaire Éponyme offer patterns designed specifically for men’s silhouettes, with adapted basic blocks rather than simply copied from women’s patterns. To complete your wardrobe, check out the collections of men’s T-shirts, men’s coats and men’s accessories.
