Sewing patterns for children’s tops: T-shirts, blouses and tops for babies to 14-year-olds

A top is the most worn item in a child’s wardrobe: worn 5 days out of 7, washed at 40°C or 60°C, stretched, faded, and replaced every 6 to 12 months in smaller sizes. Sewing your own children’s top patterns changes this dynamic: choose an organic jersey at €12 per metre, cut out a size 4 with an extra 3 cm of ease for a child who’s growing fast, and the T-shirt is ready in 90 minutes, including overlocked seams. Mass-produced ready-to-wear clothing doesn’t allow for this level of customisation.

T-shirts, blouses, vests: how to choose your children’s top pattern

Children’s T-shirt patterns are the natural starting point for sewing children’s clothes. The construction is simple: front bodice, back bodice, straight or raglan sleeves, and a ribbed or folded jersey neckline. The raglan style deserves special attention for beginners: it eliminates the need for a cut-out armhole, which shortens the assembly time by around 20 minutes and makes the construction more forgiving of placement inaccuracies.

Children’s blouses with gathers or Peter Pan collars are aimed at an intermediate level. The lack of stretch in the fabric is compensated for by construction details: gathers at the collar, shoulder darts and a back button placket. These styles generally have a looser fit than T-shirts, which is a real advantage for children going through a growth spurt. A blouse pattern in size 8 worn by a 7-year-old with a belt is a garment that can easily be carried over for another season.

Children’s summer vests and tops are among the quickest patterns to make: two to three pieces at most, straight seams, and straps to be piped. A size 6 double-gauze vest top requires around 60 cm of fabric with a width of 140 cm. These proportions mean you can use offcuts or fabric on sale, making it an ideal project for learning how to cut delicate fabric without taking any major financial risks.

Jersey, double gauze, poplin: fabrics suitable for hand-sewn children’s tops

For patterns for children’s jersey T-shirts, opt for a cotton jersey with at least 5% elastane for sizes 2–6 years, as children in this age group dress and undress themselves and put strain on the neckline every time they put the garment on or take it off. A 100% cotton jersey is more suitable for sizes 8–14 years, where ease of movement is easier to manage during construction. Recommended weight: 180 to 220 g/m² for a T-shirt that retains its shape after thirty washes at 40°C.

Double gauze remains a must-have for lightweight blouses: soft to the touch, it creases intentionally and can be machine-washed at 40°C without significant shrinkage if it has been pre-washed. Allow for around 10 per cent shrinkage on the first wash. Always pre-wash your fabric before marking out the pattern, otherwise your finished size 6 will barely fit into your size 4.

Cotton poplin is suitable for button-up shirts and structured blouses. Firmer than gauze, it makes it easier to cut straight lines and press seams, but requires ease to be built into the construction so that the child can raise their arms without pulling on the shoulder seams. A 1.5 cm dart on each side of the back neckline is usually sufficient to resolve this issue.

Reading and using a PDF pattern to sew a children’s top

PDF patterns for children’s tops come in two formats: A4 to be assembled (home format) or A0 to be printed at a print shop (workshop format). The A0 format costs between €3 and €8 depending on the service provider, but saves you from having to assemble around twenty A4 sheets and provides significantly greater precision on the neckline and armhole curves. For patterns with seam allowances included, cut directly along the outer line. Where seam allowances are not included, the standard practice is 1 cm for side and shoulder seams, and 1.5 cm for hems.

On the subject of growth-adjustable sizes for children’s top patterns, most designers offer a multi-size range from 2 to 14 years on a single sheet. For a child who falls between two sizes — a common occurrence at age 3 and at 10–12 years when body shapes begin to differ — it is possible to cut between two lines: a size 6 bodice with size 4 sleeves if the child has short arms. This flexibility does not exist in standardised ready-to-wear clothing.

  • Check the calibration square before printing: a 5 × 5 cm square printed at the wrong scale will cause all the cuts to be misaligned, and the error will only become apparent after assembly
  • Trace the size you are cutting onto tracing paper to keep the pattern intact and reuse the other sizes later
  • Follow the grain line indicated on each piece: a T-shirt body cut against the grain in jersey will stretch lengthways and shrink widthways after a few washes

Build a cohesive wardrobe around children’s top patterns

A hand-sewn top really comes into its own when paired with other handmade pieces. A marl jersey T-shirt looks just as good with joggers as it does with a children’s poplin skirt. Lightweight double-gauze blouses coordinate with linen children’s trouser patterns for summer outfits that transition seamlessly from the garden to the city. For mid-season, a hand-sewn children’s jacket worn over a T-shirt extends the season by two to three months without weighing the child down.

Some designers in the catalogue offer coordinated sets of children’s top patterns: Lilikou, Mangue-Chocolat and Klafoutis regularly publish collections designed to be sewn together, with instructions that increase in difficulty from one pattern to the next. This is an effective way to develop your skills in specific techniques — smocking, buttonholes, shirt collars — whilst building a cohesive wardrobe rather than a collection of mismatched pieces.
