FOE (fold-over elastic) is an effective finish without a overlocker, provided you sew it whilst slightly stretched; otherwise, it will pucker. Finally, thread tension: reducing it by 15 to 20 per cent on stretch fabrics prevents skipped stitches.

Choosing fabrics for a Valentine’s Day sewing project: what you really need to know

Satin is slippery. A practical solution: pin perpendicularly every 5 cm, sew on tissue paper which is then removed, and use polyester thread only (cotton breaks on slippery fabrics). Stretch lace must be cut the right way round: the side that stretches should run across the width of the garment. Flowing viscose for a romantic dress loses its shape when cut if cut off the roll: lay it flat on tracing paper and wait 24 hours for the cut-out pattern to finish relaxing before sewing.

Second-skin jersey weighing 200–220 g/m² holds its shape well for a figure-hugging dress. Anything under 150 g/m² falls into the category of light nightdresses. These are different projects, and both have their place depending on what you’re looking for.

A dress cut on the bias has a drape that straight cuts lack, but it requires 30 to 50 per cent more fabric and a day’s rest after cutting to allow the fabric to settle before the final hem. Jumpsuits are often quicker to make and look just as elegant for an evening out.

A blouse with balloon sleeves or a ruffled collar can be sewn in 4 to 6 hours and will remain a staple in your wardrobe well beyond 14 February. It’s a more sensible sewing investment than a garment designed for a single occasion. How to choose a pattern suited to your skill level for Valentine’s Day

The number of pattern pieces is a better indicator of difficulty than the labels ‘beginner’ or ‘intermediate’, which are often assessed differently by different designers. Up to 6 pieces, the project is accessible. Between 6 and 12 pieces, you’ll need to be proficient with a overlocker or flat-felled seams for lingerie. Beyond 12 pieces, experience with complex assemblies is required.
